Dung Beetles at Long Leaf Pine Preserve in Volusia County

Here is a video I took this week at Long Leaf Pine Preserve. We spotted some dung beetles and I couldn't resist. The kids loved checking them out. They actually roll the dung with their back legs, which is interesting. Dung beetles will either roll the dung to their home and store it for eating later, while some will also lay their eggs in it. They prefer the dung from animals that are herbivores. Dung beetles can be found all over Florida, and the rest of the country.
