Coastal Strand Trail at North Peninsula State Park - Ormond by the Sea

If you are looking for a nice family hike in the Ormond area, check out the Coastal Strand Trail at the North Peninsula State Park. The park is located at 40 Highbridge Road in Ormond By the Sea. The Coastal Strand Trail is 2.25 miles round trip, taking you through an interesting ecosystem of scrub habitat. It's not a trail that is stroller or wheelchair friendly, but it is one that most family members should be able to do without any problem. There is no entry fee to use the park or hike the trail.

The trail offers a short cut that will allow you to reduce the hike by probably half a mile. You walk along water, through open expanses, and through some shaded hammock. There are some inclines that hike up that offer some nice views from the top. The trail is nicely marked with signage so you don't get lost. It also offers a few benches along the way, as well as interpretive signs so you can learn about some of the things you see along the way.

We were lucky enough to see plenty of wildflowers, butterflies, deer and raccoon tracks, gopher tortoise dens, and had plenty of beautiful views. As you walk along the trail it's even close enough to the ocean that you can hear its roar.

The park also offers a few picnic tables, restrooms, and allows leashed pets. After your hike you can sit near the water and have a picnic lunch.

If you are taking this trail during the summer it will be hot and sunny through some of the areas that do not offer shade, so I'd advise doing it early in the morning to beat the heat. During the months of November-April you could pretty much do it anytime and still be comfortable.
