Always Remember to Chock the Wheels on Your RV
This past week, we learned a difficult lesson. Well, it could have been much worse, but it was still a lesson learned. Always remember to chock the wheels on your RV!
Yes, that should go without saying. I completely agree, and it's something that we have done for the entire eight years that we have owned our Keystone Bullet. Until the one time that we somehow forgot.
To be fair, I wasn't there when the forgetting of the wheel chocking took place. After our last camping trip, my husband took the trailer by himself to park in the storage lot. He parked it, put the wheel covers on to protect them from the harsh Florida sun, and then he drove away. He had no idea that he forgot to do anything at that point.
Fast forward to Hurricane Milton coming through and once that storm had passed and the streets were cleared, we took a ride to see how the trailer did in the hurricane. Our trailer is stored in a storage lot around 20 minutes from our home. We get there and see that the trailer has been pushed forward about two feet, and the jack stand has been driven about three inches into the gravel! What?!
We assumed that the hurricane-force winds must have pushed it like that, but we were surprised. It wasn't the first hurricane our RV has been through, and I'm grateful to report that it has not sustained damage from them.
It took us some time to get it jacked up out of the gravel, hooked up to the tow vehicle, repositioned, and dropped again. We were taking off the wheel covers that had been destroyed from it being pushed forward, when I said "where are the chocks?"
We realized that when my husband last parked the RV, he accidentally forgot to chock the wheels. Not doing that allowed the winds to push the RV about two feet. But it could have been worse. It could have pushed it across the lot.
Lesson learned... always remember to chock the wheels, including when you forget to! ;)
